My Take

Kerala’s hungriest man dies

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec. 9: Rappayi, 67, who was known as Kerala’s hungriest man, died on Saturday morning at his hometown Thrissur, leaving behind a legacy which few would have the stomach to carry forward. People of Thrissur called him “Theeta (food) Rappayi” with affection because of his ponderous appetite.

The ever-genial Rappayi used to eat an average of 50 idlis, 10 masala dosas, and about a dozen vadas as breakfast every day. This was followed by snacks at 11 am which would make the ordinary gourmet shudder — about a dozen vadas and a few glasses of tea. His biggest meal, no pun intended, was in the afternoon, when he would happily sit behind a mountain of rice and piles of curries. This was followed by another ‘decent’ snack in the evenings and a sumptuous dinner at night.

Rotund Rappayi, who wore loose khaki shirts which did not hide his pot belly, was a familiar sight at Swaraj Round in Thrissur. Locals used to call him “Rappayi chetta,” and he would smile at their good natured teasing while walking past. Over the years, Rappayi found mention in the Limca Book of Records by eating food prepared for 10 persons in one go.

In the early days, hotel owners used to shudder when Rappayi sauntered in and ordered an afternoon meal. But as his fame grew, hotels vied with each other to cater to Rappayi. Rappayi was naïve and was often cheated in ‘eating contests’. Once someone stuck drawing pins into plaintains which he was eating and another time, lime was mixed with his rice. But Rappayi forgave all of them with a smile.

He fell ill a few weeks ago and was admitted at a private hospital in Thrissur, where he died, sadly enough, of stomach-related complications. Rappayi remained a bachelor till the end. “I don’t have enough money to feed myself, so why think of a family,” was his response when a TV crew asked him about his lonesome life.

VHP workers thrash young couples

Ahmedabad: After the Meerut Police carried out Operation Majnu to crack-down on pesky eveteasers, it was the VHP's turn to moral police the society.

VHP and Bajrang Dal activists misbehaved with young couples and beat up boys in a park in Ahmedabad.

The party workers alleged that some boys were "harassing girls" and thus they decided to teach them a lesson.

Among the VHP workers were some girls as well. The workers were armed with hockey sticks and lathis and thrashed the young men.

The girls said that they wanted to weed the society of men who used girls for their own means.

The Ahmedabad police were nowhere to be seen and the VHP activists were law unto themselves for quite some time.

Says a girl who was beaten up, "When I tried to stop them, they hit me four times with stick. I hope no other girl is treated like this."

The man behind the lathicharge is said to be Bajrang Dal activist Babu Bajrangi.

"We have not taken the law into our hands. We just want to teach girls how to live decently," was all Babu Bajrangi had to say.

Bajrangi is accused of one of the deadliest massacres during the 2002 Gujarat riots, the Naroda Patia massacre.

Right, let Bajrang Dal take over the country...no music no movies, all men have to shave beard, have a tilak and all women have to cover their head with the pallu of their saree....Ban Jeans and skirts for women..

Did I hear someone say the Hindu version of Taleban?, but what laws like domestic violence protect spouses from quarrel in house...just catch someone on the road and bash them up because you didn't like the color of their handkerchief or some guy cleaned his girl's nose with it, No laws for this

Hockey: India hockey team in key match
Sunday, December 10, 2006 (Doha):

It is a key match for the Indian hockey team on Sunday in Doha, which could make or ruin their chances for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

They play South Korea with the winner advancing to the semis of the Asian Games. If India loses, it will be the first time the team would miss a podium finish in the Asiad.

The Indian hockey team had probably not realised that their 2-3 loss to China in the preliminary match would cost them so much.

Many jaws dropped when the likes of Viren Rasquinha, Gagan Ajit Singh and Arjun Halappa were dropped from the Asiad squad.

Confidence level

Though the team management claims that they have the best possible team in Doha, all fingers will be pointed towards them if the players fail to perform.

"Coaching is such a job that you are always at risk. We are 100 per cent confident that we will reach the semi-final by beating Korea," said Assistant Coach Harender Singh.

"Even if we cannot win, as coaches we will take responsibility for that," Singh said.

A berth in the Asian games final means a ticket to the Beijing Olympics.

The 9-0 win against Oman might be a confidence boost of sorts, but the team needs to do much better than that to get the better of the Koreans.

Bollywood stars disgust Malaysia paper
Saturday, 09 December , 2006, 15:51

Kuala Lumpur: A top Malaysian English-language daily on Saturday slammed Bollywood stars including Salman Khan for their lack of punctuality and boorish behaviour at a three-day Indian cinema extravaganza being held here.

''It's the same old Bollywood story. The antics of Bollywood stars have become legendary, and as predictable, as a bad film script,'' the New Straits Times said in a full-page commentary.

The Bollywood bigwigs are here to attend the Global Indian Film Awards function, an annual event that was launched in 2005 in Dubai. The event began with the international premiere of Khan's latest movie, Baabul on Thursday.

On Friday, a soccer match between Indian stars and Malaysian ministers ended in a 2-2 draw, and the event was to climax with an Oscar-style awards function.

Khan and other Bollywood actors are wildly popular in Malaysia, not only with its ethnic Indian population but also among the majority Malays.

The New Straits Times ire was fuelled by the dismally organised press conference before the premiere on Thursday to introduce the makers and stars of Baabul, including Khan, co-star John Abraham and director Ravi Chopra.

Abraham, Chopra and music director Aadesh Shrivastav arrived more than two hours late for the press conference, held at the luxury Palace of the Golden Horses hotel where the stars are staying. But still the press conference could not start because Khan was missing.

He came 20 minutes later after journalists were told by the organisers that he will be ''down in two minutes'' from his suite.

Just as a reporter was going to ask the first question, Chopra decided to take a call on his mobile phone, ''while the roomful of journalists stared at him in disbelief,'' the Times said in the article titled ''No need for Bollywood song, dance.''
